Sirun Khach Cross-Stone

Dsegh is one of the tourism resource-rich settlements of Debed canyon. “Sirun Khach” (the “Beautiful Cross” cross-stone built in the 13th century), is a wonderful combination of nature, everyday human labor, and culture located in Dsegh. It is on the right side of the trail leading to Bardzrakash monastery- just 500 meters away, at the top of the gorge. It was erected to serve as a memorial. Locals gave the khachkar this name (“Sirun Khach”) to reflect its exceptional beauty.

Sirun Khach is regarded as one of the masterpieces of 13th-century Armenian khachkar craftsmanship. The exact date of construction of the khachkar is unknown, however, the inscription on the khachkar reveals that it was built during the reign of Mamikon and his son Vardan.

The khachkar was presented at the Paris Exhibition in 1969, where it was awarded the second prize. It was during this relocation that one of the horizontal pillars of the khachkar was damaged. There are inscriptions on it that can provide insight into the notable persons and authorities of the time period.

Sirun Khach has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years.

The Amenaprkich (All Savior) Khachkar in Dsegh

The Amenaprkich (All-Savior) or Khachelutyun (Crucifixion) khachkar is located in the cemetery dating back to the VII-XIII centuries, in the center of Dsegh village, 200 m south-west from the village square. The ruins of a tiny church built in 654 can also be seen here.

This khachkar is a unique sample built by Mamikonians in 1281. Structurally it has similarities with the homonymous khachkar of Marts.

It depicts Jesus Christ and the scene of his crucifixion is quite detailed. There is also an inscription on both khachkar and its pedestal which is to describe the symbolism of the engraving and the purpose of its construction. The statue of Jesus is carved on the façade of khachkar. With His right hand, he makes the Sign of the Cross and holds a ribbon or an open parchment on the left.  Four simple crosses are inner carved at the top of the pedestal with the inscription underneath. It elucidates that the khachkar was erected in 1281 by Khalli’s son Teruni and his brothers, in memory of Grigor, who is most probably Grigor Mamikonyan. The name of the sculptor of the khachkar – Varham – is written on the north side of the pedestal.
